Our retail associate, Carmen, recently helped a girl find a gift for her sister who is studying Marine Biology at Coastal Carolina University. Her sister had just returned from Costa Rica where she had gone to hatch and release baby sea turtles and ensure they made it safely to the ocean.

Since the turtles hatch in the evening, her sister had to patrol the beach for animals that could cause the turtles harm, take measurements of the turtles, and other tasks. Without question, Carmen pulled out the Sea Turtle Charm Bangle, which she absolutely loved! “I vividly remember how the chains of alcohol addiction felt. Just over a year ago, I felt an unforgettable hopelessness, self-imprisoned in a misery created by my inability to put the bottle down on my own accord. At the time, the conception of choice was limited to the physical, mental, and emotional limitations set upon my body and mind’s need to drink.

Though lifelines were continuously passing me by, the environment in which I was surrounded was a constant distraction – the depths of depression and anxiety had me gasping for relief that only alcohol seemed to remedy. I knew I was a shell of a man, yet I did nothing. That is the power alcohol had over my ability to make a choice of my own. I received a call from The Herren Project who had become familiar with the state I was in.  Internally, I was resistant to the help that was being offered. Though I knew how unmanageable my life had become, accepting help would mean giving up the only false-comfort I had left. However, the outreach I received through the Herren Project was different than the concerned voicemails I had become increasingly familiar with from friends and family. There was a consistence and sincerity in their message: life could and would get better if only I took a chance on the help that was being offered.

Through their willingness and determination to save me from drowning in the tumultuous waves of alcoholism, I was lifted from the waters and taught through selflessness, empathy, and acceptance to take control of my own ship, to take the wheel and gaze at the vast, beautiful ocean of life full of opportunities to seize, dreams to capture, and choices to make. A dear friend told me, “Wheels spin out of control – they also guide us. Wheels go in circles – but wheels can be stopped.” Sobriety is not always easy, but regaining control of the wheel has given me the gift of direction, a freedom for which I am forever grateful.”

“I had to ‘surrender the wheel’ in order to take it back…

For most of my adult life, I was well respected as a mom, a professional, and an athlete. In truth, I was anxious and fearful, self-medicating with alcohol, trying desperately to keep my struggles hidden.

I finally entered residential treatment April 17, 2006 (Boston Marathon Monday) – and took my first steps into sobriety. However, the foundation of recovery that saved my life was not built without extreme difficulty; I still faced the consequences of three DUI convictions, which included a three-month jail sentence. Throughout early recovery, I had to learn to follow directions and listen, surrendering my will, ideas and even my freedom. The guidance and direction I received equipped me to grow in my own recovery journey, enabling me to ‘take back my wheel,’ and ultimately help others do the same through my work with The Herren Project.

Today, I’ve completed more than 70 marathons and ultra-marathons. But running the 2017 Boston Marathon is more important to me than any other as it’s the first time in 11 years that my sobriety birthday falls on marathon Monday. On April 17, 2006, I entered a treatment center broken and sick, but on April 17, 2017, I will ‘take the wheel’ at the starting line of the world’s most iconic and historic marathon healed, healthy and overwhelmingly grateful.”

“From freshman to senior year, high school comes with new beginnings around every corner. For us, a new school day means an opportunity to continue to spread awareness on the dangers of substance abuse with the help of the King Philip DECA chapter and The Herren Project.

As high school seniors, every day could mean the last opportunity to make an impact on the community of Wrentham, Massachusetts. We initiated our campaign, A Story Told in Green and Gold, where we hosted several events over the course of the past six months. One of our most impactful events occurred during the most wonderful time of the year. Among the many multi-colored trees, one purple tree stood out the brightest among the rest at the Wrentham Center Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. The tree represented not only our campaign’s partnership with the THP Project Purple Initiative but, our community’s encouragement, support, and passion to fight back on a disease that impacts the lives of millions every day.

The support from our community inspires us every day to stand together against a greater cause that too commonly affects people everywhere. These past months have inspired us to “take the wheel” and create a positive future for those in our community.”

“In February 2016, our lives came to a screeching halt after learning that our 17-year-old son had routinely been using alcohol as a means to cope with anxiety and depression. We already knew Will was struggling terribly with anxiety, but we had no idea that drinking alcohol before bed each night was how he was getting to sleep. What followed were two unsuccessful and nightmarish months of therapists, outpatient adolescent substance abuse counseling, and careful monitoring.

In April, we made the painful, but lifesaving decision to withdraw Will from the school he loved and send him to an intensive wilderness therapy program in Utah, which focused on his anxiety, depression and addiction. Will was gone for nearly nine weeks. When he returned, the really hard work began of living one day at a time, sometimes one moment at a time.

After seeing a documentary on Chris Herren’s story, I reached out to THP in what I would call a “long shot attempt” at bringing Chris to Will’s school for a presentation. Miraculously, this became a reality. I was gifted a beautiful ALEX AND ANI bracelet fittingly named, “Take the Wheel”, signifying new beginnings, guidance and journey, all of which encompassed our family’s new normal.

Each day is a new beginning for Will and also an opportunity for us to continue providing him with guidance and love along his journey. Wearing this bangle is a beautiful reminder of the ability each new day presents to do so.”

1. Meditate and Move

Why it works: This two-punch mind-body solution is proven to reduce negative thoughts. Exercise and meditation, done twice weekly for two months, reduced depression symptoms by 40 percent in student study participants, according to Translational Psychiatry.

Make it happen: Start with 30 minutes of focused attention meditation (FAM): Clear your mind by paying full attention to a chosen object or your breathing. Follow this with 30 minutes of aerobic exercise, which researchers believe creates new neurons in your brain’s hippocampus, helping the meditation lessons to really stick.

2. Find Meaning in Your Job

Why it works: There are three things that contribute to job happiness, according to a study done by researchers at the University of Alabama: 1) Finding your work meaningful and believing that it helps your company achieve its goals. 2) Feeling freedom in your role to do your job (in other words: no micromanaging). 3) Being allowed to create your own job description based on what suits your skills (known as “job crafting”).

Make it happen: First, consider your current role and determine if your job meets the three conditions outlined above. If not, use your yearly performance review meeting to discuss your job description with your manager, and come prepared with how you can mold the role to your skills and passions in ways that benefit you and the company’s bottom line.

3. Keep Strict Office Hours

Why it works: Research suggests that taking time away from work—not just physically out of the office, but truly unplugged—gives you a chance to recharge and come back revitalized and more productive.
